AVILA Business School
Building a new college in India
With an ambitious project, the Karmel Missionsstiftung - Dr. Fernando is paving the way
together with the German AVILA Group for young Indians to have an independent life.
In Bangalore, a metropolis with a population of several million, initial discussions were
held in January 2011 with the representatives of Karmel Missionsstifung - Dr. Fernando and
local Carmelites concerning the building of a new Business School. The plans are already
being drawn up.
Bangalore is one of India's largest and fastest-growing cities. The city's economy used to be based on silk and sandalwood.
Today Bangalore (or Bengaluru) is an up-and-coming centre for the IT industry. However, impoverished slums still
provide evidence of the often extreme divide in Indian society. Education is the most sustainable
way of changing this.
At the AVILA Business School, in a few years' time thousands of students should be able to study subjects such as
Business and Management, Law, Psychology and Physiology and in so doing lay a firm foundation for their future.
They are currently considering the site upon which the school should be built. For example, the school might be
built on a site in Carmelaram leased long term to the Carmelites.
In January 2011 the representatives of the Karmel Missionsstiftung - Dr. Fernando,
fathers of the Carmelites and the provincial of Malabar signed a letter of intent for
the Business School, which was the idea of Dr. Douglas Fernandos.
Detailed plans are currently being drawn up. In addition to the teaching blocks, multi-storey
residential buildings with accommodation for students and lecturers will be built.
